Business Vision and Mission Statements
Business operate to make money and every successful business starts with clarity of purpose. That clarity begins by defining your business's vision and mission — two distinct but interconnected pillars that align your company's personel, shape the company's culture, and drive performance. These statements tell your target market(s) how they will make money. |
-
Your business vision statement captures your ultimate goal — the future you’re building. It should also speak to your market. For example:
- To help businesses grow more quickly and effectively.
-
To lead our industry with trust, innovation, and impact.
-
Your business mission statement defines what you do today, for whom, and how you create value. For example:
-
We champion freedom by supporting human rights around the globe.
-
We help clients win by aligning our expertise with their most critical goals.
-
In essence:
-
Vision is your North Star — the “why” or purpose behind your business.
-
Mission is your operating mindset — your everyday actions answering “what to do?”, "for whom?", "delivered value?", and “how to do it?”.
In military terms, your vision is your strategy and your mission is your tactics that you will use to achieve your strategic goal.
There is another important distinction between the two:
- Your vision usually remains the same over time. If it changes, it is to expand or focus the vision/goal.
- Your mission will need to change over time to meet changing conditions.
Lastly, the combination of the vision and mission statements are part of your long term strategy to survive and grow.
Hint: If you’re unsure where to start, look at how industry leaders frame their vision — not just what they do, but what they stand for.
By contrast, if you can't find the vision and mission statements for the companies you research, their chances of success are limited because they will eventually loose their way.
