Comparison between Vision and Mission statements

Picture comparing apples to oranges

Introduction

Examples are one of the best ways of illustrating the difference between the two types of statements:

Vision statements

  • My vision is to see a the world free and at peace.
  • My vision is to have the freedom that being rich offers.

Mission statements

  • My mission is to fight tyranny.
  • My mission is to get that sale using my experience and understanding of the client.

Vision statements express your goals — what you want to see without worrying how you got there. Mission statements have actions leading to goals.

Using mountain climbing as an analogy:

  • The vision is what you will be able to see from the summit — that is your goal.
  • The mission is to climb to the top, no matter the obstacles.
